Dental insurance in the UAE: what is usually covered

Two people with the same insurer can have very different dental cover. Here is how UAE dental insurance usually works, what it tends to include and exclude, and how to check yours.

Why dental cover is confusing

Many people in Sharjah assume their health card covers the dentist, only to find a large co-payment or an exclusion at the counter. Dental insurance in the UAE is usually an add-on to a health plan, and what it covers depends on the policy your employer or family chose, not just the company name on the card. The same insurer can offer basic, standard and premium plans with very different dental benefits.

This guide explains how dental insurance normally works in the UAE, which treatments are usually included, which are often excluded, how co-payments and pre-approvals work, and the quickest way to check your own cover before a visit.

How dental insurance works in the UAE

Most residents are covered through an employer health plan. Basic plans focus on medical care and may include only emergency dental treatment, such as pain relief or an extraction. Higher-level plans add routine dental benefits, usually with an annual limit, a co-payment for each visit or treatment, and a list of exclusions. Some families buy dental cover as a separate add-on.

Behind many insurers there is a third-party administrator, or TPA, that manages the network of clinics and approvals. That is why your card may show two names. When you check dental cover, it’s the plan details that matter: what is covered, the annual limit, the co-payment and whether pre-approval is needed.

Usually covered

What dental insurance often includes

Consultation and X-rays

Examination and diagnostic X-rays are included in most plans with dental benefits.

Scale and polish

Many plans cover a routine clean once or twice a year.

Fillings

Treatment of decay with fillings is usually treated as essential care.

Extractions

Removing a painful or damaged tooth, including many wisdom teeth, is commonly covered.

Root canal treatment

Often covered as essential care, sometimes with a co-payment or approval.

Gum treatment

Treatment for gum disease is covered by many plans.

Often excluded

What dental insurance often leaves out

Teeth whitening

Considered cosmetic by almost every plan.

Veneers and Hollywood smile

Cosmetic, so usually excluded.

Adult braces and aligners

Many plans exclude orthodontics for adults; some cover children.

Crowns, bridges and dentures

Cover varies: some plans include them as major work, others exclude them.

Implants

Often excluded or limited.

Pre-existing work

Some plans exclude treatment started before the policy began.

Co-payments, limits and deductibles

A co-payment is the share you pay, often a percentage of the treatment cost. An annual limit is the most the plan will pay in a policy year; once it’s reached, you pay the rest. Some plans also have a deductible, a fixed amount you pay before cover starts. Understanding these three numbers tells you more about your dental cover than the brand name does.

If you need several treatments, it can make sense to plan them across two policy years so you use both annual limits. We’re happy to help you plan this.

Terms to know

  • Co-payment: your share
  • Annual limit: the yearly maximum
  • Deductible: paid before cover starts
  • Waiting period: time before some cover begins
  • Exclusions: treatments not covered

What is pre-approval?

For many treatments beyond a check-up, such as root canal treatment, crowns or multiple fillings, insurers ask the clinic to request approval before starting. The clinic sends X-rays and notes, and the insurer confirms what it will pay. This can take from a few minutes to a couple of days. It is normal, and it protects you from unexpected bills. We handle the request for you and tell you as soon as we hear back.

Emergency dental care and insurance

If you’re in pain, don’t let paperwork delay treatment. Most plans, including many basic ones, cover emergency relief such as treating an infection or removing a tooth that can’t be saved. Bring your card and we will check your dental cover while we see you. Approvals for urgent care are usually quick. See our emergency dentist page for first aid advice.

Children and family plans

Family plans often include check-ups, cleaning and fillings for children, and some include orthodontic treatment for children under a set age. Regular six-monthly visits make the most of these benefits and catch problems early, when treatment is simplest. Check each child’s own card, because family members usually have separate member numbers.

If your plan does not cover something

Cosmetic treatment such as whitening and veneers, and adult orthodontics, are often outside dental cover. That doesn’t mean you have to pay all at once. We accept Tabby, Tamara and Toothpick, which let you spread the cost in instalments, subject to each provider’s approval. You always get the full cost in writing before treatment starts, so you can decide calmly.

Tips to get the most from your plan

Book check-ups and cleans regularly, because these are usually covered by dental cover and they prevent much bigger bills later on. Ask for a written plan with the cost and your share before major treatment. Keep your card details up to date, especially after changing jobs. And if your dental cover renews at a set time each year, plan larger treatment around the renewal date.

Common reasons claims are declined

Most declined claims come down to a handful of reasons, and many can be avoided with a quick check before treatment. Sometimes the plan simply doesn’t include the treatment, such as whitening or veneers. Sometimes the annual limit has already been used, or the policy has a waiting period that has not finished. Occasionally the insurer asks for more information, such as an extra X-ray or a clearer description of why the treatment is needed.

If a claim is declined, we explain the reason in plain language, tell you whether an appeal with more information is worthwhile, and talk through other options, including alternative treatments or spreading your share of the cost.

Usual reasons

  • Treatment is excluded by the plan
  • Annual limit already reached
  • Waiting period not finished
  • More information needed
  • Card or member details out of date

Changing jobs or plans

Your dental cover follows your employer, not you.

When you change employer, your dental cover usually changes too, sometimes from one day to the next. If you’re in the middle of treatment, such as a root canal followed by a crown, tell us as soon as you know your new insurer so we can request a fresh approval and avoid gaps. If you are about to lose cover, it can be worth completing essential treatment before the old plan ends.

For self-employed people, freelancers and visitors, separate dental plans are available, but check the waiting periods carefully. In many cases, paying directly with instalments works out simpler than buying a plan just before treatment.
