Teeth cleaning and check-up in Sharjah

A professional teeth cleaning removes the tartar your toothbrush cannot, and the check-up that comes with it catches small problems before they become big ones. It takes about 45 minutes and is covered by most insurance plans. Many patients know it as “scaling” or “the scaler”, after the ultrasonic instrument we use.

The visit that saves the other visits

Most fillings, root canals and gum problems start as something a routine check-up would have caught early. Regular teeth cleaning keeps your gums healthy, your breath fresh and your teeth looking their best, and it is usually the quickest and least expensive visit you will make to a dentist.

This guide explains what happens during a scale and polish, how often you need one, deep cleaning for gum disease, aftercare, and what affects the cost at Al Jazeera Dental Clinic in Al Majaz, Sharjah.

Why professional teeth cleaning matters

Even with good brushing, plaque collects in places a toothbrush can’t reach: behind the lower front teeth, between the back teeth and just under the gum line. Within a few days it hardens into tartar (calculus), which sticks to the tooth like cement. Tartar can’t be brushed or flossed away, and it keeps the gums inflamed.

Left alone, that inflammation causes bleeding gums, bad breath and, over years, gum disease that loosens teeth. A professional teeth cleaning removes the tartar so the gums can heal, and it gives the dentist a chance to spot decay, cracks and worn fillings while they are still small and simple to fix.

What happens during teeth cleaning

Check-up

The dentist examines every tooth, your gums, tongue and soft tissues, and checks old fillings and crowns.

Scaling

Tartar is removed above and just below the gum line with an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments.

Polishing

Teeth are polished to remove surface stains and leave a smooth surface that plaque sticks to less easily.

Advice and plan

We show you any problem areas, suggest the right brush and floss, and book your next visit.

Scaling and polishing explained

Scaling is the part of professional cleaning that removes hardened tartar. An ultrasonic scaler uses gentle vibration and a fine water spray to break up deposits, and hand instruments remove what is left. You will hear a buzzing sound and feel some vibration and water, but it should not be painful. If your teeth are sensitive, tell us and we can use cooler water, slow down or numb the area.

Polishing uses a soft rubber cup and a mildly gritty paste to remove surface staining from tea, coffee, cigarettes and some foods. It leaves the teeth feeling smooth and looking brighter. Polishing does not change the natural colour of your teeth; for that you would need teeth whitening.

Does it hurt?

  • Most people feel only vibration and pressure
  • Sensitive areas can be numbed
  • Bleeding during the clean is normal if gums are inflamed
  • Any tenderness settles within a day or two

Standard clean or deep cleaning?

For most people a routine scale and polish every six months is enough. If the gums have pulled away from the teeth and formed pockets, tartar collects below the gum line where a standard clean can’t reach. In that case we recommend a deeper cleaning, sometimes called root planing, carried out in sections with the gum numbed. You can read more on our gum treatment page.

We measure the gums at your check-up and only suggest deeper treatment if the measurements and X-rays show it is needed. You’ll see the readings yourself.

Gum disease is common and often painless in its early stages, which is why regular checks matter. Signs to watch for include gums that look red or puffy, bleeding when you brush, gums that seem to be shrinking back, teeth that feel loose or have moved, and a bad taste that doesn’t go away. Caught early, gum inflammation is fully reversible with professional cleaning and better home care.

How often should I come?

  • Every 6 months for most adults
  • Every 3 to 4 months if you have gum disease
  • More often during pregnancy, when gums are more sensitive
  • Every 6 months for children from age three

After your teeth cleaning

Eating and drinking

You can eat and drink straight away. If fluoride was applied, wait 30 minutes before eating.

Tender gums

Gums may be a little sore for a day, especially if there was a lot of tartar. A warm salt-water rinse helps.

Keeping it clean

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and cut down sugary snacks between meals.

Know the difference

Plaque, tartar and stains

Plaque

A soft, sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day. Brushing and flossing remove it. If it is left, the bacteria irritate the gums and produce acid that causes decay.

Tartar

Plaque that has hardened with minerals from saliva, usually within a few days. It’s rough, yellow or brown, and only a dental professional can remove it with scaling.

Stains

Surface discolouration from tea, coffee, cola, saffron, turmeric and smoking. Polishing removes most surface stain; deeper colour changes need whitening.

Looking after your teeth between visits

A professional clean gives you a fresh start, but what you do every day decides how long it lasts. Brush for two minutes twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, angling the bristles towards the gum line. Spit out after brushing rather than rinsing, so the fluoride keeps working.

Clean between your teeth once a day with floss or small interdental brushes, which are often easier and more effective for adults with small gaps. An electric toothbrush helps many people clean more thoroughly. Keep sugary drinks and snacks to mealtimes, drink water during the day, and if you smoke, stopping makes a real difference to your gums.

Products we often recommend

  • Soft or electric toothbrush
  • Fluoride toothpaste (1,450 ppm for adults)
  • Interdental brushes in the right size
  • Sensitivity toothpaste if cold drinks hurt

Teeth cleaning for children

Children benefit from a gentle check-up and clean too. We start from around age three with a short, friendly visit, a parent in the room, and plenty of explanation. A clean polish, fluoride varnish and, where useful, fissure sealants help protect new adult teeth from decay. See our children’s dentistry page for more.

Teeth cleaning in pregnancy

Hormone changes make gums more likely to bleed during pregnancy. A professional clean is safe and recommended, ideally in the second trimester. Let us know you’re pregnant when you book.

How much does teeth cleaning cost in Sharjah?

The price depends on how much tartar has built up, whether a standard scale and polish is enough or you need a deeper clean under the gums, and whether X-rays are due. That is why we don’t put one number on this page that could be wrong for you.

Your consultation is free and you get the full cost in writing before anything starts. Routine check-ups and scale and polish are covered by many UAE insurance plans, and you can spread larger costs with Tabby, Tamara or Toothpick. Insurance and payment options.

FAQ

Teeth cleaning questions

How long does teeth cleaning take?
A routine check-up with scaling and polishing usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. A first visit or a deep clean can take longer.
Will cleaning make my teeth whiter?
Polishing removes surface stains, so teeth often look brighter, but it does not change their natural shade. Whitening does that.
Does teeth cleaning damage enamel?
No. Professional scaling and polishing removes tartar and stain, not healthy enamel. It is safe to have every six months.
Why do my gums bleed during cleaning?
Bleeding usually means the gums are inflamed by plaque and tartar. Once the area is clean and you keep it clean at home, the bleeding normally stops within a couple of weeks.
What should I do before my appointment?
Brush as normal before you come. Bring a list of any medicines you take and your insurance card, and tell us if you have any heart conditions, are pregnant or take blood thinners.
Can I have teeth cleaning if I have braces?
Yes, and it is especially useful because braces trap plaque. We clean carefully around the brackets and show you the best brushes to use at home.
Is teeth cleaning covered by insurance?
Most UAE plans cover routine cleaning, often once or twice a year. We accept FMC, NGI, Inayah, Aafiya, SAICO / Damana, GlobeMed, MSH, Fazaa and Esaad. Send your card on WhatsApp and we will check.
