Straighter teeth, discreetly

If you have always wanted straighter teeth but don’t like the idea of metal brackets, a clear aligner system may be the answer. The trays are almost invisible, you can take them out to eat and brush, and a digital plan shows how your teeth are expected to move before you start.

This guide explains how aligners work, who they suit, the treatment process, how long it takes, daily life with trays, retainers and what affects the cost at Al Jazeera Dental Clinic in Al Majaz, Sharjah.

How do clear aligners work?

Clear aligners are thin, transparent plastic trays made to fit your teeth precisely. Each set is shaped slightly differently from the last, so it applies gentle, controlled pressure that moves your teeth a small step at a time. You change to a new set every one to two weeks, following a digital plan that maps the movement of every tooth from start to finish.

Small tooth-coloured bumps called attachments are often bonded to some teeth. They give the trays something to grip so they can turn and move teeth more accurately. They are removed at the end of treatment.

Because each clear aligner is removable, you take it out to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. That freedom is the biggest advantage of aligners, and also their biggest responsibility: they only work while they are in your mouth.

Aligners can treat

  • Mild to moderate crowding
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that have relapsed after old braces
  • Some overbites and crossbites
  • Slightly rotated or tipped teeth
Is it right for you?

Clear aligner or fixed braces?

Aligners suit you if

Your case is mild to moderate, you want treatment that’s almost invisible, and you’ll wear the trays 20 to 22 hours every day.

Braces suit you if

You have severe crowding, large bite problems or rotated teeth, or you would rather not be responsible for a removable appliance. See braces.

Our honest advice

Not every case suits aligners. At your free assessment we tell you plainly which option will give the best result for your teeth.

The process

Your clear aligner journey

Free assessment

We check your teeth, gums and bite, take X-rays and photos, and tell you whether aligners are suitable.

Scan and digital plan

Impressions or scans are used to create a step-by-step plan. You see the expected movement before you commit.

Wearing your trays

You wear each set for one to two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, with check-ups every six to eight weeks.

Retainers

When your teeth are in position, retainers keep them there. Night-time wear protects your result for the long term.

How long does treatment take?

Many aligner cases finish in about six to eighteen months. Simple adjustments to a few front teeth can be quicker, and more complex movements take longer. Your exact timeline comes from your digital plan, and we tell you at the start.

The single biggest factor is how consistently you wear the trays. Leaving them out for long periods slows progress and can mean the next set does not fit properly. Some people need a few extra “refinement” trays at the end to perfect the result; this is normal and planned for.

Tips for success

  • Wear trays 20 to 22 hours a day
  • Take them out only to eat, drink and brush
  • Brush before putting them back in
  • Keep them in the case, never in a napkin
  • Change sets exactly on schedule

Living with clear aligners

Most people adapt to aligner treatment quickly. A new set can feel tight for a day or two, which shows it’s working. Your speech may sound slightly different for the first few days. Because there are no wires or brackets, aligners are generally more comfortable than fixed braces and there are fewer food restrictions.

Always remove the trays to eat and to drink anything except plain water. Tea, coffee and sugary or coloured drinks can stain the trays and trap sugar against your teeth. Brush your teeth before putting the trays back, and rinse and gently brush the trays themselves morning and night with cool water.

Cleaning your trays

  • Rinse in cool water whenever you remove them
  • Brush gently with a soft brush, no toothpaste
  • Never use hot water, which warps them
  • Store them in the case when not wearing them
Benefits

Why patients choose aligners

Discreet

The trays are clear and very hard to notice, so most people will not know you are straightening your teeth.

Removable

Eat what you like and clean your teeth normally, then put the trays back in.

Comfortable

Smooth plastic with no wires or brackets to rub your cheeks.

Predictable

A digital plan shows the expected movement before treatment begins.

Keeping your teeth straight afterwards

Teeth naturally want to drift back after any orthodontic treatment, especially in the first year. Retainers hold them in their new position. Most people wear a clear removable retainer at night, and some also have a thin wire bonded behind the front teeth.

Retainers are part of the treatment, not an optional extra. Wearing them as advised is the best way to protect the time and money you have invested in your smile. We check them at your regular visits.

Retainers wear out over time, so plan to replace them every few years. If one cracks or no longer fits, contact us promptly rather than going without, because even a few weeks without a retainer can let teeth start to move.

Adults welcome

Most of our aligner patients are adults. Evening appointments until 10 PM make check-ups easy around work. Healthy gums are essential before teeth are moved, so we check and treat them first.

Dentist-led clear aligner treatment vs at-home kits

Mail-order aligner kits can look tempting, but moving teeth is a medical treatment. Before any tooth is moved, a dentist needs to check that the gums and bone are healthy, that there is no decay or infection, and that the bite will work at the end, not just the front teeth. X-rays can reveal problems such as short roots or hidden decay that a home impression kit never sees.

With dentist-led aligner treatment, you have regular check-ups, attachments placed where they are needed, adjustments if a tooth is not tracking, and someone to call if anything goes wrong. That supervision is what keeps results safe and stable.

Clear aligners for teenagers

Teenagers can have aligner treatment too, once their adult teeth are through. It suits responsible teens who will wear the trays consistently. Some systems include wear indicators so parents can check progress.

How much do clear aligners cost in Sharjah?

The price depends on how far your teeth need to move, how many sets of trays you need, whether refinements are needed at the end, and the retainers you choose. That is why we do not put one number on this page that could be wrong for you.

Your orthodontic assessment is free and you get the full cost in writing before anything starts. Orthodontic cover varies a lot between insurance plans, so send us your card and we’ll check. Many patients spread the cost in monthly instalments with Tabby, Tamara or Toothpick. Insurance and payment options.

Invisible braces and aligner brands

Clear aligners are often called invisible braces or clear braces. Invisalign is the best-known brand, but several aligner systems work on the same principle: a series of custom, removable trays made from a digital scan, each moving the teeth a little. What matters most is the treatment plan and how faithfully the trays are worn, 20 to 22 hours a day.

At your free consultation, Dr Anija, a general dentist with a Master’s Certificate in Orthodontics, checks whether aligners will work for your teeth, explains the system we recommend and gives you the full cost in writing. Compare options in types of braces and clear aligners vs braces.

FAQ

Questions about aligners

Does clear aligner treatment hurt?
A new set feels tight for a day or two as it starts moving your teeth. Most people find aligners more comfortable than fixed braces.
Can I eat with my trays in?
No. Take them out to eat and to drink anything except water, then brush before putting them back.
Will people notice my clear aligners?
They are very discreet. Most people will not notice unless you tell them.
Can I drink coffee with trays in?
It is best not to. Hot drinks can warp the plastic and coloured drinks stain it. Take the trays out, drink, rinse your mouth, then put them back.
Will my speech be affected?
You may notice a slight lisp for the first few days while your tongue gets used to the trays. It usually disappears quickly, especially if you talk and read aloud.
What if I lose a tray?
Call us. Depending on your progress we may ask you to move to the next set or the previous one while a replacement is made.
Are aligners as good as braces?
For suitable cases they give excellent results. For complex cases fixed braces are often more predictable, and we will tell you honestly which is better for you.
