Root canal treatment in Sharjah
Root canal treatment removes infection from inside a tooth so you can keep it instead of having it pulled. It’s done under local anaesthetic, usually in one or two visits, by a dentist with endodontic training.
Saving your tooth, not pulling it
If a tooth is aching, throbbing at night or sore when you bite, the nerve inside may be infected. Root canal treatment is how dentists save that tooth. It has a reputation for being painful, but with modern anaesthetic and careful technique most patients say it feels much like a filling, and it ends the pain the infection was causing.
This guide explains the signs, what happens during the procedure, how long it takes, aftercare, and what affects the cost at Al Jazeera Dental Clinic in Al Majaz, Sharjah.

Signs you may need a root canal
An infected or dying nerve doesn’t always hurt, but when it does the pain is usually hard to ignore. These are the most common warning signs we see at the clinic:
- Toothache that throbs, or wakes you at night
- Pain with hot or cold that lingers after the drink has gone
- Pain when you bite down or tap the tooth
- A pimple-like bump on the gum that may leak a bad taste
- A tooth that has turned grey or darker than its neighbours
- Swelling in the gum, cheek or jaw
Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and the infection only shows on an X-ray during a routine check-up. That is one reason we take an X-ray whenever we suspect a problem with the nerve.

What is root canal treatment?
Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels called the pulp. It runs down through narrow canals inside the roots. Deep decay, a crack, an old leaking filling or a knock can let bacteria reach the pulp. Once it’s infected or dying it cannot heal by itself, and the infection can spread into the bone at the tip of the root, forming an abscess.
Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes each canal, disinfects it and seals it. The outside of the tooth stays in place, so you keep chewing on your own tooth rather than living with a gap. In most cases root canal treatment is the only way to keep a badly infected tooth.
Our team includes a dentist with postgraduate training in endodontics, the area of dentistry that deals with the inside of the tooth, so complex cases such as curved or narrow canals are handled in-house.
Why save the tooth?
- Your own tooth usually lasts longer than any replacement
- Neighbouring teeth stay where they are
- Chewing and your bite stay natural
- It often costs less than extraction plus a bridge or denture
Root canal treatment step by step
X-ray and diagnosis
We confirm the nerve is infected, count the canals and check their shape on a free X-ray.
Numbing
The tooth and gum are numbed with local anaesthetic. You feel pressure, not pain.
Cleaning the canals
A small opening is made, the infected pulp is removed and every canal is cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
Sealing and protecting
The canals are filled and sealed. Back teeth usually need a crown to protect them afterwards.
Does a root canal hurt?
For most people the honest answer is no more than a normal filling. The tooth is completely numbed before we start, and we check it is numb before we begin. The treatment actually relieves the throbbing pain caused by the infection.
After root canal therapy the tooth may feel tender for a few days, especially when you bite. An ordinary painkiller taken as directed on the pack is usually enough. If you’re nervous, tell us when you book: we give you a longer appointment, agree a hand signal so you can stop us at any time, and explain each step before we do it.
One visit or two?
- Front teeth with one canal are often finished in one visit
- Molars have three or four canals and can take longer
- Heavily infected teeth may need medicine placed inside for a week
- We tell you the expected number of visits at the start
Root canal treatment or extraction?
Root canal treatment
Keeps your natural tooth and root, so the bone and gum stay healthy. Usually needs a crown on back teeth. The tooth works like any other once restored.
Extraction
Quicker on the day, but leaves a gap. Nearby teeth can drift and the bone shrinks over time, so most gaps need a bridge, denture or implant later.
Our advice
If the tooth has enough healthy structure to restore, saving it is almost always better in the long run. If it can’t be saved, we tell you honestly and plan the extraction.
Root canal re-treatment
Sometimes a tooth that had endodontic treatment years ago becomes sore again. This can happen if a canal was missed, the seal has leaked, new decay has reached the root filling, or the tooth has cracked. In many cases the old filling material can be removed, the canals cleaned again and resealed. This is called re-treatment and it can save a tooth that would otherwise be lost.
We assess these teeth carefully with an X-ray first, explain the chance of success honestly, and compare it with the alternatives before you decide.
Tips to protect a treated tooth
- Have the permanent crown fitted without long delays
- Brush twice a day and clean between teeth
- Wear a night guard if you grind
- Keep six-monthly check-ups and X-rays
Aftercare and the crown
Until the tooth is fully restored after root canal therapy, avoid chewing hard food on it. Keep brushing and cleaning between your teeth as normal. A tooth that has had a root canal is more brittle, especially a back tooth that takes heavy chewing forces, so a crown is usually recommended to stop it cracking.
We tell you at the start whether your tooth will need a crown, so the full cost is clear before anything begins. With a good seal, a crown and regular check-ups, a tooth that has had endodontic treatment can last for many years.
Call us if
- Pain gets worse after three days
- Swelling appears or returns
- The temporary filling falls out
- Your bite feels high or uneven
How much does root canal treatment cost in Sharjah?
The price depends on which tooth it’s (front teeth have fewer canals than molars), how many canals it has, how much infection there is, whether an old root filling has to be redone, and whether the tooth needs a crown afterwards. That is why we don’t put one number on this page that could be wrong for you.
Instead, your consultation and X-ray are free, and you get the full cost in writing before anything starts. Root canal therapy is covered, at least in part, by many UAE insurance plans, and you can spread the cost in instalments with Tabby, Tamara or Toothpick. Insurance and payment options.

An endodontist is a dentist who focuses on the inside of the tooth, which is what root canal treatment treats. At Al Jazeera Dental Clinic, many root canal cases are treated by our Medical Director, Dr Ranjeet Kumar, a general dentist with a Diploma in Endodontics. He takes extra time with nervous patients and explains the X-ray on screen before starting.
In the UAE, “endodontist” is a licensed specialist title. Most root canals, on front and back teeth, are done every day by trained general dentists. If your tooth has very unusual canals or a failed previous treatment that is better handled by a specialist endodontist, we will tell you honestly.
