Teeth whitening in Sharjah
Dentist-supervised whitening, in the clinic or at home, that lifts years of tea, coffee and age staining safely. We check your teeth first and show you a realistic shade before you decide.
A brighter smile, safely
Teeth whitening is one of the simplest ways to refresh your smile. Done properly, it lifts stains from tea, coffee and everyday life without harming your enamel. The key is a health check first, the right strength of gel, and realistic expectations.
This guide explains how whitening works, in-clinic and take-home options, safety, how long results last, aftercare, alternatives such as veneers, and what affects the cost at Al Jazeera Dental Clinic in Al Majaz, Sharjah.

How teeth whitening works
Teeth darken over time. Tea, coffee, cola, saffron, turmeric and smoking leave stains on the surface and deeper in the enamel, and the inner layer of the tooth naturally becomes more yellow with age. Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel that releases oxygen into the enamel and breaks down the coloured molecules, so the whole tooth looks lighter.
It’s different from polishing, which only removes surface stain, and from whitening toothpaste, which mainly polishes. Dentist-supervised teeth whitening uses the right strength of gel for your teeth and protects your gums, so it is both more effective and safer than unregulated products.
Whitening works well for
- Yellowing with age
- Tea, coffee and food stains
- Smoking stains
- Generally dull or darker natural teeth
It works less well on grey or banded staining, and it doesn’t change crowns, veneers or fillings.
In-clinic or take-home whitening?
In-clinic whitening
A stronger gel applied by the dentist with your gums protected. Noticeable results in a single appointment, ideal before a wedding or event.
Take-home whitening
Custom trays made from moulds of your teeth, with a gentler gel you wear at home for a set time each day over one to two weeks. Even, gradual results.
Combined
A boost in the clinic followed by home trays to fine-tune and maintain the shade. Often the best of both.
Your teeth whitening appointment
Check-up
We check for decay, leaking fillings and gum problems, which must be treated first, and record your starting shade.
Clean
A professional clean removes surface stain and tartar so the gel can work evenly.
Whitening
The gel is applied in the clinic, or your custom trays are fitted with clear instructions for home use.
Review
We check the new shade, discuss sensitivity and give you tips to keep your smile bright.
Is teeth whitening safe?
When it is carried out or supervised by a dentist, yes. The gel is applied only to the teeth, the gums are protected, and the strength and timing are matched to you. Whitening doesn’t thin or damage healthy enamel.
The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity to cold, which usually settles within a day or two. A sensitivity toothpaste used for a week before and during treatment helps. Some people notice mild gum irritation if gel touches the gums; this also settles quickly.
Whitening isn’t recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for children, or when there is untreated decay or gum disease. We check for all of this first.
How long do the results last?
Results often last many months to a few years, depending on your habits. Coffee, tea, cola, smoking and highly coloured foods bring staining back faster. Good brushing, regular cleans and occasional top-ups with your take-home trays keep teeth bright.
For 48 hours after whitening, while the enamel is most porous, avoid strongly coloured food and drink, such as coffee, tea, red sauces, curry and berries, and avoid smoking. Drinking through a straw helps protect front teeth from staining.
After the first two days you can return to your normal diet. Rinsing with water after coffee or tea, brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and keeping up six-monthly cleans all help the brighter shade last longer.
White diet for 48 hours
- Water, milk and clear drinks
- Rice, pasta and white bread
- Chicken, fish and eggs
- Yoghurt and white cheese
- Bananas and pears
Whitening, veneers or a Hollywood smile?
Whitening changes colour only. If you also want to change the shape, length or alignment of your teeth, or if your teeth are chipped or have deep grey staining, veneers or a Hollywood smile may be the better option.
Many people whiten first and then decide whether they still want veneers. If you already have crowns or fillings on front teeth, whitening the natural teeth may mean those restorations need replacing to match. We explain this before you start so there are no surprises.
Realistic expectations
Everyone’s teeth respond differently. Before treatment we hold a shade guide to your teeth and show you a realistic target shade, rather than promising an unnatural result.
Why dentist-supervised whitening is better
Health check first
Decay, cracks and gum disease are found and treated before any gel is used, which protects your teeth.
Correct strength
The gel strength and wear time are matched to your teeth and sensitivity, not one size for everyone.
Custom trays
Trays made from your moulds keep the gel on the teeth and off the gums, for even, comfortable results.
Honest advice
If whitening won’t give the result you want, we say so and explain the alternatives.
What causes teeth to discolour?
Food and drink
Tea, coffee, cola, red sauces, saffron and turmeric leave pigments on and in the enamel. These respond very well to whitening.
Smoking and shisha
Tar and nicotine cause brown and yellow staining that builds up quickly. Stopping smoking helps results last.
Ageing
Enamel thins with age and the yellower dentine underneath shows through more. Whitening lightens it noticeably.
Medicines and trauma
Some antibiotics taken in childhood, excess fluoride or a knock to a tooth can cause grey or patchy staining that may need veneers or internal whitening.
Teeth whitening before a wedding or event
If you have a wedding, graduation or photoshoot coming up, plan your whitening two to four weeks ahead. That allows time for a check-up and clean, any small fillings to be done first, and for the shade to settle after treatment. Teeth often look slightly whiter in the first day or two and then settle to their true new shade.
In-clinic whitening gives the quickest result, and take-home trays let you fine-tune the shade in the days before the event. We’ll plan the timing with you.
Planning checklist
- Book a check-up and clean first
- Whiten 2 to 4 weeks before the date
- Avoid new staining in the final week
- Keep your trays for a quick top-up

Get directionsIn-clinic whitening and “Zoom” whitening
Many people search for Zoom whitening or laser whitening. Zoom is a brand name for light-assisted in-clinic whitening; laser and LED systems work in a similar way. In every case, the whitening is done by a professional-strength gel applied under supervision while your gums are protected. The light is used to activate the gel; it’s the gel that whitens.
In-clinic whitening gives a visible change in one appointment. Home whitening with custom trays is slower but gentle, and many people combine the two. At your consultation we check for decay, gum problems and old fillings or crowns (which do not whiten) before recommending the best option.
