Stained and discoloured teeth in Sharjah
Yellow, brown or grey teeth can make you hide your smile. The right treatment depends on the type of stain, and many people are surprised how much a clean alone can do.
Find the cause, then choose the fix
Stained teeth are one of the most common reasons people ask about cosmetic dentistry. Tea, coffee, karak, saffron, shisha and smoking all leave their mark, and teeth naturally become more yellow with age. Some stains sit on the surface and polish away; others are inside the tooth and need whitening, bonding or veneers.
This guide explains the different types of discolouration, the 5 most common causes, every treatment option from cleaning to veneers, how to prevent stains coming back, and what affects the cost, at Al Jazeera Dental Clinic in Al Majaz, Sharjah.

Surface stains or deeper discolouration?
Extrinsic stains sit on the outer surface of the enamel. They come from strongly coloured food and drink and from tobacco. They often look brown or yellow, build up along the gum line and between teeth, and usually respond very well to a professional clean and polish, followed by whitening if you want a brighter shade.
Intrinsic discolouration is inside the tooth. It can come from ageing, a knock to a tooth, some antibiotics taken in childhood, excess fluoride while teeth were forming, or a tooth that has had root canal treatment. It often looks grey, dark or patchy and may need whitening, bonding, veneers or a crown.
Many people with stained teeth have a mix of both, which is why we check carefully before recommending anything.
What colour can tell us
- Yellow: often ageing or surface stain
- Brown: tea, coffee, tobacco or tartar
- Grey or dark: a knocked or root-treated tooth
- White spots: early decay or fluorosis
- Bands: childhood medicines
5 common causes of stained teeth
1. Food and drink
Tea, coffee, karak, cola, red sauces, saffron, turmeric and berries all stain enamel.
2. Smoking and shisha
Tar and nicotine cause stubborn brown and yellow stains that build up quickly.
3. Tartar build-up
Hardened plaque picks up stain easily and looks yellow or brown near the gums.
4. Ageing
Enamel thins over time, so the yellower dentine underneath shows through more.
5. Injury and medicines
A knock to a tooth or some antibiotics in childhood can cause grey or banded discolouration from within.
Treatment options for stained teeth

Bonding
Tooth-coloured resin covers a single stained or patchy tooth in one visit.
Veneers
Thin shells change the colour and shape of front teeth when whitening can’t. See Hollywood smile.
Which treatment is right for your stained teeth?
If your stained teeth are mainly marked on the surface, start with a professional clean. Many people are pleased with the result and don’t need anything more. If your teeth are naturally yellow or have darkened with age, whitening is usually the most effective and conservative option.
For one dark tooth, especially after a knock or root canal treatment, internal whitening, bonding or a crown may work better. If your teeth have deep grey bands, are also chipped or uneven, or have many fillings on the front, veneers may give the best result. At your free shade check we show you realistic options and explain the pros and cons of each.
Realistic expectations
Whitening lightens natural teeth only. Crowns, veneers and fillings keep their original colour, so they may need replacing to match. We explain this before you start.

Preventing stained teeth
You don’t have to give up tea or coffee, but a few habits help. Rinse with water after coloured drinks, drink cold drinks through a straw, and avoid sipping slowly over long periods. Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth, because stain sticks to plaque and leads to tooth stains.
Stopping smoking and shisha makes the biggest difference. Professional cleans every six months remove new stain before it builds up, and occasional top-ups with home whitening trays keep a whitened smile bright.
Stain-smart habits
- Rinse with water after tea or coffee
- Use a straw for cold drinks
- Brush twice daily with fluoride
- Clean every six months
- Stop smoking and shisha
Whitening products: what is safe?
Whitening toothpastes mainly remove surface stain by polishing, and some are quite abrasive, so use them carefully if your teeth are sensitive. Charcoal powders can scratch enamel and are best avoided. Strong whitening kits bought online or used in beauty salons can burn the gums and damage teeth.
In the UAE, tooth whitening should be carried out or supervised by a licensed dentist. Professional whitening uses the right strength of gel for you, protects your gums and starts with a check for decay and gum disease, which keeps it safe and effective.
Stained teeth in children and teenagers
Children can have tooth stains for different reasons, such as iron supplements, tartar, poor brushing around braces, or white spots from early decay or fluorosis. Baby teeth are often whiter than adult teeth, so new adult teeth can look yellow next to them; this is normal.
Whitening isn’t usually recommended for children. A gentle clean, better brushing and fluoride often help. Our children’s dentistry team can check and advise.
White spots after braces
White marks around where brackets were can be early decay. Fluoride and careful cleaning often help, and small resin treatments can improve their appearance.
Stained teeth: myths and facts

Fact: dentist-supervised whitening doesn’t harm healthy enamel when used correctly.
Myth: charcoal whitens teeth
Fact: charcoal can scratch enamel and make teeth look more yellow over time.
Myth: yellow teeth are dirty
Fact: some yellowness is natural dentine colour and ageing, not poor hygiene.
Myth: whitening works on crowns
Fact: crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour with whitening.
Stained teeth and diet in the UAE
Some of the most loved drinks and dishes in the region are also the most staining. Karak tea, Arabic coffee, saffron rice, turmeric curries and dark fruit juices all contain strong pigments. Add regular shisha and the result is often brown or yellow tooth stains within a few months of a clean.
You don’t need to give these up. Drinking water alongside, rinsing after meals and keeping up six-monthly cleans makes a big difference. If you have whitened your teeth, take extra care in the first 48 hours after treatment, when enamel picks up colour most easily.
Most staining
- Karak and black tea
- Arabic and black coffee
- Saffron and turmeric
- Cola and dark juices
- Shisha and cigarettes
