Root canal cost in Sharjah: what you’re really paying for
A root canal saves a tooth that would otherwise be pulled. Here is what changes the price, what is usually covered by insurance, and why the crown afterwards matters.

A fair price starts with the right diagnosis
When a tooth aches at night or throbs when you bite, the first question most people ask is how much a root canal will cost. The honest answer is that the root canal cost depends on which tooth is affected, how complicated its roots are and what the tooth needs afterwards. A front tooth with one straight canal is a very different job from a back molar with three or four curved canals.
This guide walks through the six things that set the root canal cost in Sharjah, what insurance normally covers, how the price compares with extraction, and how to avoid paying twice.

What happens in root canal treatment
Inside every tooth is a soft core of nerve and blood vessels called the pulp. Deep decay, a crack or a knock can let bacteria reach it, causing inflammation or infection. During root canal treatment the dentist numbs the tooth, removes the damaged pulp, cleans and shapes the narrow canals, and seals them so bacteria cannot return.
Most treatments take one or two visits. Afterwards the tooth is no longer sensitive to hot and cold, but it’s more brittle than before, which is why a back tooth usually needs a crown. Understanding these steps makes it easier to see where the root canal cost comes from.
6 things that change the root canal cost
1. Which tooth
Front teeth usually have one canal. Premolars have one or two, and molars three or four, so molars take longer and cost more.
2. Root shape
Curved, narrow or calcified canals need more time and care to clean properly.
3. Infection
A tooth with an abscess may need a dressing and an extra visit before the canals can be sealed.
4. Re-treatment
Redoing an old root canal that has failed is more complex than treating a tooth for the first time.
5. The final restoration
A filling may be enough for a front tooth. A back tooth usually needs a crown, which is a separate cost.
6. X-rays and visits
Most plans include X-rays before, during and after treatment, plus a review to check healing.
Root canal or extraction: which costs less?
On the day, taking a tooth out is usually cheaper than saving it. Over time, it often is not. A missing back tooth lets the teeth around it tip and drift, makes chewing harder and can eventually need a bridge or denture to fill the gap. When you compare the root canal cost with extraction, include the cost of replacing the tooth later.
Keeping your natural tooth also keeps your bite and jaw bone stable. That is why we always check whether a tooth can be saved before recommending removal, and we explain both options honestly.
Saving the tooth helps
- Keeps your natural bite
- No gap for teeth to drift into
- No bridge or denture needed
- Chewing stays comfortable
- Usually the better long-term value
Does insurance cover root canal treatment?
Most UAE insurance plans that include dental cover treat root canal therapy as essential care, so part or all of it’s often covered, usually with a co-payment. Crowns are covered less consistently; some plans include them, others classify them as major or cosmetic work. Some treatments need pre-approval from the insurer before they start.
We accept FMC, NGI, Inayah, Aafiya, SAICO / Damana, GlobeMed, MSH, Fazaa and Esaad. Send a photo of your card on WhatsApp and we will check your cover and request any approval for you, so you know your share of the treatment cost before treatment begins.
If your plan doesn’t cover it
- Pay your share with Tabby
- Spread it with Tamara
- Use Toothpick dental financing
- Cash or card

How to avoid paying twice
The most expensive root canal is the one that has to be redone. Failure usually happens for three reasons: a canal was missed, bacteria leaked back in through a temporary or broken filling, or the tooth cracked because it was never crowned. Careful X-rays, magnification, a properly sealed final restoration and a crown on back teeth all reduce that risk.
When you compare quotes, ask whether X-rays, the final filling and a review visit are included, and whether a crown is recommended. A slightly higher root canal price that includes these steps is often far better value than a cheaper quote that leaves them out.
Do not wait for the pain to stop
Sometimes the pain from an infected tooth fades on its own. That usually means the nerve has died, not that the problem has gone. The infection can keep spreading quietly and return as an abscess, which is more painful and can make treatment longer. Waiting rarely lowers the treatment cost; more often it raises it, or means the tooth can no longer be saved.
If you have lingering pain with hot or cold, pain when biting, or a pimple on the gum, book a check-up. See our toothache guide for quick relief until your visit.

Signs a tooth may need a root canal
Not every toothache means a root canal, and not every infected tooth hurts. These are the signs that usually lead us to test the nerve and take an X-ray. The earlier the problem is found, the simpler the treatment tends to be, and the lower the treatment cost is likely to be.
Pain that lingers for more than a few seconds after something hot or cold is one of the clearest signals that the nerve is inflamed. So is pain that wakes you at night or starts on its own without a trigger.
Common signs
- Lingering pain with hot or cold
- Throbbing pain that wakes you
- Pain when you bite or tap the tooth
- A tooth turning grey or dark
- A pimple or swelling on the gum
- A bad taste near one tooth
Root canal cost for children and older adults
Baby teeth with deep decay can sometimes be treated with a simpler procedure called a pulpotomy, which removes only the inflamed part of the nerve. It’s quicker than a full root canal and keeps the baby tooth in place until the adult tooth is ready, which protects the space and the bite. See our children’s dentistry page.
In older adults, canals can become narrow or calcified, which may take longer to find and clean. Heavily filled teeth may also need a crown sooner. These are reasons the root canal price can vary with age, and we always explain the details before starting.
What a root canal feels like today
Many people worry that a root canal will hurt. With modern local anaesthetic, most patients say it feels much like having a filling: some pressure and vibration, but not pain. The tooth may feel tender for a few days afterwards, which ordinary painkillers usually manage well.
