A good denture is made, not bought

Dentures replace missing teeth and the gum around them, helping you chew, speak and smile with confidence. A good denture is made from careful impressions, measurements of your bite and several fittings, so the dentures cost you’re quoted reflects the time and laboratory work involved as well as the materials.

This guide compares full and partial dentures, explains the main materials, sets out the five factors that change the dentures cost in Sharjah, and covers immediate dentures, adjustments, insurance and instalments.

Types

Main types of dentures

Full acrylic denture

Replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Held by suction and the shape of the gums.

Partial acrylic denture

Replaces some teeth, clipping onto natural teeth. The most affordable partial option.

Metal-frame partial

A thin cobalt-chrome frame makes it stronger, slimmer and more comfortable for long-term wear.

Flexible partial

Made from a flexible nylon material with gum-coloured clasps, so there is no visible metal.

Immediate denture

Fitted on the day teeth are removed, so you’re never without teeth. Needs relining as gums heal.

5 factors that change the dentures cost

1. Full or partial. A full upper or lower denture is a different job from a partial that has to fit around existing teeth.

2. Material. Standard acrylic usually costs least; metal-frame and flexible partials cost more but are often more comfortable.

3. Teeth quality. Higher-grade denture teeth look more natural and wear more slowly.

4. Preparation. Extractions, fillings on remaining teeth or gum treatment may be needed first.

5. Number of fittings and adjustments. A well-fitting denture often needs several try-ins and follow-up adjustments, which should be included in the dentures cost.

Partial dentures: acrylic, metal or flexible?

Acrylic partials are the quickest and most affordable, and easy to add teeth to later. They are thicker, so some people notice them more when speaking. Metal-frame partials are thin, strong and stable, and are often the best long-term choice when several teeth are missing. Flexible partials are comfortable and have no metal clasps on show, but they are harder to adjust or add to (see our guide to flexible dentures).

When comparing the dentures cost of each, think about how long you’ll wear it and whether more teeth may need replacing in future.

Quick guide

  • Acrylic: lowest cost, easy to add to
  • Metal frame: slim, strong, long-lasting
  • Flexible: no visible metal, comfortable
  • All: need daily cleaning and check-ups
The process

How dentures are made

Assessment

We check your mouth, gums and any remaining teeth, and talk about your goals.

Impressions and bite

Detailed impressions and bite records are taken so the denture fits your mouth.

Try-in

You try the teeth set in wax to check fit, look and bite before it’s finished.

Fit and adjust

The finished denture is fitted, and sore spots are adjusted at follow-up visits.

Immediate dentures

If teeth need to be removed, an immediate denture can be made beforehand and fitted on the day of the extraction, so you never have to go without teeth. As the gums and bone heal over the next few months they shrink, and the denture will need relining to keep it snug, or replacing with a final denture. Include these steps when you look at the denture cost for immediate dentures.

Getting used to new dentures

New dentures take a few weeks to feel natural, and this adjustment period is part of what the denture price covers. Start with soft food cut into small pieces and chew on both sides at once. Reading aloud helps your tongue adapt and your speech settle. Extra saliva is common at first and settles. Small sore spots are normal and easily adjusted, so come back rather than putting up with them. Most people feel confident within a month.

Caring for your dentures

Remove your dentures at night to rest your gums, unless we advise otherwise. Brush them daily with a denture brush and a mild soap or denture cleaner, not ordinary toothpaste, which is abrasive. Soak them overnight in water or a cleaning solution, and rinse before putting them back. Brush any natural teeth and your gums twice a day too.

Dentures and the gums underneath change over time, so a check-up every year, and relining every few years, keeps the fit comfortable and protects your mouth.

Daily care

  • Take out at night
  • Brush with a denture brush
  • Soak overnight
  • Rinse before wearing
  • Annual check-up

Insurance and paying in instalments

Cover for dentures varies between UAE plans; some include them as major treatment and others exclude them. Extractions and fillings needed beforehand are more often covered. Send us your card and we’ll check what your plan pays towards the denture cost. For the rest, we accept Tabby, Tamara and Toothpick, subject to approval.

Dentures, bridges or implants?

Dentures are the most flexible and often the most affordable way to replace several missing teeth. A bridge is fixed and feels more like natural teeth, but needs strong teeth either side of the gap. Implants are another option for some people; we don’t place implants, but when they may suit you we explain the pros and cons and refer you to a colleague we trust. Read our guide to missing teeth for a full comparison.

When dentures need replacing

Dentures don’t last forever, so plan for relines in the long-term denture price. Teeth wear down, the base can crack, and the gums shrink over time so the denture becomes loose. Signs it’s time for a reline or new denture include looseness, sore spots that keep returning, difficulty chewing, clicking when you talk, or a face that looks more sunken. A loose denture can rub and cause ulcers, so don’t put up with it. For more independent information, see the NHS guide to dentures.

Eating and speaking with dentures

Chewing with dentures is a skill that improves with practice. In the first weeks, choose soft food such as fish, eggs, rice, pasta, cooked vegetables and yoghurt, and cut food into small pieces. Chew slowly on both sides at the same time so the denture stays balanced. Bite into firmer food with the side teeth rather than the front teeth, which tends to tip the denture.

Very sticky or hard food, such as toffee and nuts, can loosen or crack a denture, so take care with these even once you are confident. If speech feels awkward, practise saying difficult words slowly in front of a mirror; most people find any lisp disappears within a week or two.

Easy first foods

  • Fish, eggs and soft chicken
  • Rice, pasta and soft bread
  • Cooked vegetables
  • Yoghurt, labneh and soups
  • Soft fruit such as banana

Denture adhesive: do you need it?

A well-made denture should stay in place without adhesive, especially an upper full denture held by suction. Adhesive can give extra confidence for social occasions or for lower full dentures, which are naturally less stable. Use only a small amount and clean it off thoroughly each night. If you find yourself needing more and more adhesive, the denture probably no longer fits well and needs a reline or a new denture, which is worth including when you plan the denture cost over the years.

Dentures for older relatives

Many of our denture patients are brought in by their sons and daughters. If you’re helping an older relative, come with them to the consultation, bring a list of their medicines and any health conditions, and tell us if they have arthritis or poor eyesight, which can make cleaning harder. We can suggest easy-grip brushes and simple routines, and we take extra time to make sure the denture is comfortable before they leave. Healthy gums and a well-fitting denture make a real difference to nutrition and confidence in later life, so the denture price is often one of the most worthwhile family investments.
