Dental crowns and bridges in Sharjah
Zirconia and porcelain crowns (often called teeth capping or a tooth cap) that protect weak or broken teeth, and bridges that fill gaps, all shade-matched in daylight so they look natural outside the clinic.
Strong, natural-looking teeth again
When a tooth is cracked, heavily filled or weakened after root canal treatment, a filling alone may not hold it together. A dental crown covers and protects the whole tooth, so you can bite and smile with confidence. Bridges use the same technology to replace a missing tooth.
This guide explains when you need a crown, the materials, the two-visit process, bridges, shade matching, aftercare and what affects the cost at Al Jazeera Dental Clinic in Al Majaz, Sharjah.

What is a dental crown?
A dental crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It’s made to match the shape, size and colour of your natural teeth, and it’s cemented in place so it does not come out. A crown holds a weak tooth together, protects it from cracking and restores a natural look and bite.
Crowns are one of the most common ways to save a tooth that is too damaged for a filling. With good care, a well-made crown can last for many years.
A dental crown is also used cosmetically on front teeth that are badly discoloured, chipped or misshapen, where a veneer wouldn’t be strong enough. Because a dental crown covers every surface, it can change the colour, size and shape of a tooth completely while also protecting what is left of the natural tooth underneath. We always remove as little healthy tooth as possible to make room for it.
You may need a crown if
- A tooth is cracked or has broken
- A filling is too large for the tooth to support
- A back tooth has had root canal treatment
- A tooth is badly worn by grinding
- A front tooth is discoloured or misshapen
- You need a bridge to replace a missing tooth
Types of dental crowns
Zirconia
Very strong and tooth-coloured, ideal for back teeth that take heavy biting forces. Modern zirconia also looks natural on many front teeth.
All-ceramic (e.max)
Excellent translucency and the most lifelike appearance, so a popular choice for front teeth where looks matter most.
Porcelain fused to metal
A metal core with a porcelain outer layer. Strong and reliable, though a thin grey line can show at the gum over time.
How a dental crown is made and fitted
Assessment and X-ray
We check the tooth and root, treat any decay or infection first, and agree the material and shade with you.
Preparation
The tooth is numbed and gently shaped so the crown can fit over it. Impressions or scans are taken.
Temporary crown
A temporary crown protects the tooth while your permanent crown is made in the lab, usually within one to two weeks.
Fitting
We check the fit, colour and bite in daylight, then cement the crown permanently and polish it.
Bridges: replacing a missing tooth
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with a false tooth held in place by crowns on the teeth either side. It is fixed in your mouth, so it doesn’t come out for cleaning, and it restores your bite and smile.
Bridges work well when the neighbouring teeth are strong and healthy, especially if they already have large fillings and would benefit from crowns anyway. Where the neighbouring teeth are untouched, a partial denture or an implant (which we refer for) may be a more conservative choice. We explain all options honestly.
Keeping the area under a bridge clean is important. We show you how to use special floss threaders or small brushes to clean underneath the false tooth every day.
Bridge or denture?
- Bridge: fixed, natural feel, needs strong neighbouring teeth
- Partial denture: removable, less tooth preparation, quicker
- Implant: we refer to a trusted surgeon if it suits you best
Getting the colour right
A crown that’s too white or too grey stands out immediately, especially on a front tooth. We match the shade in natural daylight as well as under the clinic light, compare it with the neighbouring teeth, and record details such as translucency at the edges so the lab can copy them.
If you’re planning teeth whitening, do it before the crown is made. Crowns don’t change colour with whitening, so we match the crown to your teeth once they have reached their new shade.
Front-tooth tip
For front teeth we can show you a temporary crown of the planned shape first, so you can see how it looks and ask for changes before the final crown is made.
Caring for your dental crown
A crowned tooth needs the same care as a natural one. The crown itself cannot decay, but the edge where it meets the tooth can, so brushing twice a day and cleaning between your teeth is essential. Regular check-ups let us spot any problems at the margin early.
Avoid biting very hard things such as ice, bones or bottle tops, and wear a night guard if you grind. After fitting, the tooth may be slightly sensitive for a few days. If your bite feels high, call us and we’ll adjust it in a few minutes.
How long do crowns last?
Most well-made crowns last many years; ten years or more is common with good care. How long yours lasts depends on the material, your bite, grinding and how well the tooth and gum are looked after.
Crown or something else?
Large filling vs crown
If more than about half of a back tooth is filling, a crown usually protects it better than replacing the filling again.
Veneer vs crown
Veneers cover only the front surface of healthy front teeth. Crowns cover the whole tooth and suit teeth that are heavily filled or weakened.
After a root canal
Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are more brittle and usually need a crown to prevent fracture.
Signs an old dental crown needs attention
Dark line at the gum
Common with older metal-based crowns as gums recede. Usually cosmetic, but we check the edge for decay.
Pain or sensitivity
A crowned tooth that starts to ache may have decay at the margin or a problem with the nerve. An X-ray tells us which.
Chipped porcelain
Small chips can sometimes be polished or repaired; larger ones may mean the crown needs replacing.
Food trapping
Food catching beside a crown can mean a gap has opened at the contact point and should be checked.
How much does a dental crown cost in Sharjah?
The price of a crown depends on the material (zirconia, all-ceramic or porcelain fused to metal), how many teeth are involved, and whether the tooth needs a root canal or core build-up first. A bridge costs more than a single crown because it involves several units.
That is why we don’t put one number on this page that could be wrong for you. Your consultation and X-ray are free, and you get the full cost in writing before anything starts. Crowns and bridges are covered in part by many UAE insurance plans, and you can spread the cost with Tabby, Tamara or Toothpick. Insurance and payment options.
