Most bad breath starts in the mouth

In most people, bad breath comes from bacteria on the back of the tongue, between the teeth or under the gums. Dry mouth, fasting, smoking and some foods make it worse. Less often, it comes from the sinuses, tonsils or stomach.

This checker looks at your answers together and tells you the most likely cause first, so you know where to start. It’s private, and nothing you tick is sent to anyone.

Fresh breath

A 4-step routine that fixes most bad breath

Clean your tongue

Every morning, from back to front, with a scraper or your toothbrush.

Clean between teeth

Every night with floss or interdental brushes. Trapped food is a major source of odour.

Drink water

Saliva fights odour. Sip water through the day, especially in the heat or when fasting.

Have a professional clean

Tartar and gum pockets need a dentist or hygienist. See teeth cleaning.

FAQ

Bad breath questions

How can I tell if I have bad breath?
Lick the back of your wrist, let it dry for 10 seconds and smell it. Or ask someone you trust. Breathing into your hand is not reliable.
Does mouthwash cure bad breath?
It masks the smell for a short time. Cleaning your tongue and between your teeth, and treating any gum problem, deals with the cause.
Why is my breath worse when fasting?
Saliva drops when you do not eat or drink. Brush and clean your tongue after suhoor and drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor.
When should I see a doctor instead of a dentist?
If your mouth is healthy but the smell continues, or you have sinus problems, tonsil stones or reflux, see your doctor. With diabetes, a sweet or fruity smell needs prompt medical advice.
