Why are my teeth sensitive?
A twinge from cold water or ice cream is common, but the cause matters. Answer three quick questions to find out what is likely going on and what will help.
Sensitivity is a signal
Most sensitivity comes from exposed dentine, the layer under the enamel, after enamel wears or gums shrink back. It usually responds well to the right toothpaste and habits. But sensitivity can also be an early cavity, a cracked tooth or an inflamed nerve, and those need a dentist.
This checker uses what triggers it, how long it lasts and what else is going on to point you in the right direction.
What makes teeth sensitive
Worn enamel
Acidic drinks and hard brushing wear the protective layer away.
Receding gums
Exposed roots have no enamel, so they react to cold and brushing.
Recent whitening
Common and temporary. Read about sensitivity after whitening.
A new filling
Mild sensitivity for a few weeks is normal.
Grinding
Wears enamel and can crack teeth. A night guard helps.
Decay or a crack
Sensitivity in one tooth, or pain that lingers, needs a check. Try the toothache checker.
