Sensitivity is a signal

Most sensitivity comes from exposed dentine, the layer under the enamel, after enamel wears or gums shrink back. It usually responds well to the right toothpaste and habits. But sensitivity can also be an early cavity, a cracked tooth or an inflamed nerve, and those need a dentist.

This checker uses what triggers it, how long it lasts and what else is going on to point you in the right direction.

Common causes

What makes teeth sensitive

Worn enamel

Acidic drinks and hard brushing wear the protective layer away.

Receding gums

Exposed roots have no enamel, so they react to cold and brushing.

Recent whitening

Common and temporary. Read about sensitivity after whitening.

A new filling

Mild sensitivity for a few weeks is normal.

Grinding

Wears enamel and can crack teeth. A night guard helps.

Decay or a crack

Sensitivity in one tooth, or pain that lingers, needs a check. Try the toothache checker.

FAQ

Sensitive teeth questions

Does sensitive toothpaste really work?
Yes, for most people with exposed dentine, but it takes regular use twice a day for 2 weeks or more. Keep using it, as the effect wears off if you stop.
Is tooth sensitivity serious?
Usually not, but pain that lingers for more than 30 seconds, wakes you at night or affects one tooth should be checked.
Can sensitive teeth be fixed?
Yes. Options include desensitising varnish, bonding over exposed roots, fixing the bite, a night guard or treating decay.
Why are my teeth sensitive to cold after whitening?
Whitening gel temporarily opens tiny pores in the enamel. It usually settles within a few days to 2 weeks.

Still sensitive?

If it has not improved after 2 to 4 weeks, we can find the cause. Consultation and X-ray are free.
