How to fix crooked or overlapping teeth: your options explained

Crooked, crowded or overlapping teeth are very common, and there is more than one way to fix them. Some options move the teeth; others change how they look. Here is how to tell which suits you.

Move the teeth, or change how they look?

There are two broad ways to fix crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatment, with clear aligners or braces, actually moves the teeth into a better position. Cosmetic treatment, with composite bonding or veneers, reshapes the front surfaces so mildly crooked teeth look straighter without moving them.

Which is right depends on how crooked the teeth are, whether your bite is affected, your age, your budget and how quickly you want results. This guide explains each option honestly, including when a quick cosmetic fix isn’t a good idea.

Why teeth become crooked or overlap

The most common cause is simply a lack of space: the teeth are slightly too large for the jaw, so they rotate or overlap. Other causes include baby teeth lost too early, thumb sucking in childhood, an inherited jaw shape, and teeth drifting after an extraction.

Teeth also tend to move a little throughout life, which is why some people who had straight teeth as teenagers notice crowding in their lower front teeth in their twenties or thirties, especially if they stopped wearing a retainer after braces.

Why it’s worth fixing

  • Overlapping teeth are harder to clean
  • Plaque builds up, raising the risk of decay and gum disease
  • Uneven bites can chip or wear teeth
  • A straighter smile is easier to keep healthy
  • Many people simply feel more confident

4 ways to fix crooked teeth

Clear aligners

A series of nearly invisible removable trays moves the teeth gradually. Ideal for mild to moderate crowding and spacing in adults who want discreet treatment. Clear aligners

Braces

Metal or tooth-coloured ceramic brackets give precise control and suit more complex crowding and bite problems, as well as teenagers. Braces

Composite bonding

Tooth-coloured resin is added to reshape slightly uneven or chipped front teeth in a single visit, without moving them.

Veneers

Thin shells of composite or porcelain cover the front teeth to disguise mild crookedness and change shape and shade. Veneers

Clear aligner trays used to straighten crooked teeth
Clear aligners are almost invisible
Tooth-coloured ceramic braces straightening overlapping teeth
Ceramic braces blend in with the teeth
Composite bonding reshaping an uneven front tooth
Bonding can even out small irregularities

Can you fix crooked teeth without braces?

Yes, in two ways. Clear aligners straighten teeth without brackets or wires, and for many adults with mild to moderate crowding they work as well as braces. You remove them to eat and brush, and they need to be worn for most of the day to work.

Bonding and veneers can make mildly crooked teeth look straight without any orthodontic treatment at all. This is quick, but it has limits: it does not fix the bite, and if the teeth are very crooked, making them look straight would mean removing too much healthy tooth. In those cases we’ll recommend straightening first and, if you still want, cosmetic work afterwards. Read our comparison of composite vs porcelain veneers.

How to straighten overlapping front teeth

Overlapping upper or lower front teeth are one of the most common reasons people ask us about straightening. Where the overlap is mild, clear aligners can usually create the small amount of space needed by gently widening the arch or polishing a fraction of a millimetre between teeth, and then align them.

Where the overlap is more severe, or the bite is also affected, braces may give a more predictable result. Either way, a retainer afterwards is essential, because overlapping teeth have a strong tendency to move back.

We’ll check

How it works

From first visit to straight teeth

Free consultation

We examine your teeth and bite, take X-rays and photos, and talk about what bothers you.

Your options

We explain which treatments suit you, how long each takes and what each costs, in writing.

Treatment

Aligners, braces, bonding or veneers, with regular check-ins along the way.

Retainer

A retainer keeps your new smile in place. This step matters as much as the treatment itself.

How long and how much?

Bonding can be done in one visit and veneers in a few. Aligners and braces take longer, usually months rather than weeks, depending on how far the teeth need to move.

Cost depends on the treatment chosen and how complex your case is, so we don’t publish one figure that may not apply to you. The consultation and X-ray are free, you get the cost in writing, and instalments are available with Tabby, Tamara and Toothpick. See our braces cost guide and aligners vs braces comparison.

Cost depends on

  • Which treatment you choose
  • How crooked the teeth are
  • Whether the bite also needs correcting
  • How long treatment takes
  • Retainers afterwards
FAQ

Crooked teeth: common questions

What is the fastest way to fix crooked teeth?
Composite bonding or veneers can make mildly crooked teeth look straighter in one or a few visits, but they do not move the teeth or correct the bite.
Can adults straighten crooked teeth?
Yes. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy, and many of our aligner patients are adults.
Can overlapping teeth be fixed without braces?
Often yes, with clear aligners. Mild overlaps can sometimes be disguised with bonding or veneers instead.
Are veneers a good way to fix crooked teeth?
Only for mild cases. For very crooked teeth, straightening first is healthier because it avoids removing too much tooth.
Do teeth move back after straightening?
They can, which is why wearing a retainer afterwards is essential.
How do I know which option is right for me?
Book a free consultation. We will examine your teeth and bite and explain each option and its cost in writing.
