Recovery advice for right now

Aftercare instructions are easy to forget once you leave the clinic, especially if you were still numb. Most questions we get by phone are the same: can I eat this, is this swelling normal, when should the pain stop?

This assistant gives advice for the stage you are at, from the first 24 hours to more than a week later. It also tells you clearly which signs are normal and which mean you should get in touch.

When to get help straight away

Most recovery is uncomfortable but straightforward. A few signs aren’t normal and should be checked quickly. Spreading swelling with difficulty breathing or swallowing needs a hospital emergency department first.

Get help if you have

  • Swelling spreading to your face, eye or neck
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Bleeding that doesn’t stop with 30 minutes of firm pressure
  • Fever with dental pain or swelling
  • Pain that gets much worse after day 2 or 3
FAQ

Aftercare questions

When can I eat after a filling?
With tooth-coloured fillings you can eat as soon as the numbness wears off. Until then, avoid hot drinks and take care not to bite your cheek or lip.
How long does pain last after a tooth extraction?
Discomfort usually peaks in the first two to three days and then eases. Pain that becomes much worse after day 2 or 3 can be a dry socket and should be checked.
Can I smoke after an extraction?
Avoid smoking, shisha and straws for at least 72 hours. Suction and smoke can dislodge the clot and slow healing.
Is sensitivity after whitening normal?
Short zings of sensitivity for a day or two are common and settle on their own. A sensitive toothpaste helps.
